Seminar Summary

This seminar delves into the interwoven topics of the polyvagal theory, mixed vagal states, trigeminal nucleus for pain, complex pain syndrome, and trauma. The seminar aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate connections between these concepts and their implications for pain management and trauma recovery.

The seminar will explore the interwoven vagus, which refers to the complex network of nerves and physiological processes associated with the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and the stress response. Participants learned about the vagal pathways and their impact on overall well-being and resilience.

Diving into the polyvagal theory, which proposes that the vagus nerve has evolved to respond to environmental cues and modulate social engagement, fight-or-flight responses, and immobilization. Participants gain insights into the three distinct states outlined by the polyvagal theory: the ventral vagal state, sympathetic fight-or-flight response, and dorsal vagal state. They learn how these states influence emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and stress responses.

Building upon the understanding of polyvagal theory, the seminar explored mixed vagal states, which occur when individuals experience a combination of the different vagal states simultaneously. Participants examined the nuances of these mixed states and their impact on autonomic functioning, emotional well-being, and pain perception.

The discussion moves to the trigeminal nucleus for pain, an essential component of the nervous system responsible for transmitting and processing pain signals. Participants delved into the intricacies of trigeminal neuralgia and explore the various treatment modalities available for managing this complex pain syndrome. The seminar emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in addressing trigeminal neuralgia and related conditions. It looks at how Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can support this condition.

The latter part of the seminar focuses on complex pain syndrome and trauma. Participants learned about the complex interplay between pain, trauma, and the nervous system. The seminar explored the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development of complex pain syndromes in individuals who have experienced trauma. Participants gained insights into the importance of trauma-informed care in pain management and the potential for craniosacral therapy to facilitate healing and recovery.

Throughout the seminar, participants engaged in interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises to deepen their understanding of the topics presented. The seminar aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and strategies for incorporating these concepts into their clinical practice.

The seminar provides a comprehensive exploration of the interwoven vagus, polyvagal theory, mixed vagal states, trigeminal nucleus for pain, complex pain syndrome, and trauma. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the intricate connections between these concepts and their implications for pain management and trauma recovery. The seminar highlighted the importance of a holistic approach that considers both the physiological and psychological aspects of pain and trauma.

Seminar Objective

The objective of this seminar is to provide participants with a comprehensive interwoven understanding  of the vagus, nerve, polyvagal theory, and mixed vagal states, as well as their connections to the trigeminal nucleus for pain, complex pain syndrome, and trauma. Through pow, discussions, and experiental exercises, participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the physiological and psychological mechanisms involved in pain perception, trauma responses, and the role of the vagus nerve in regulating these processes. By the end of the seminar, participants will be equipped with valuable insights and strategies to enhance their clinical practice.

Seminar Type

A  8-hour online in-person seminar. Synchronous and Asynchronous options. Complete recordings of the live seminar will be available for 12-months from seminar completion.

Seminar Format

Body of Wonder Seminars are designed with layers of experience and learning opportunities in mind. The intention is to support people sensing, feeling and becoming deeply connected with the work. This seminar combines didactic with experiential practices.

Seminar Topics

The Glymphatics of the CNS, a Biodynamic Orientation consists of the following core topics that are built upon with further topics.

  1. the Vagus Nerve, Polyvagal Theory, and Mixed Vagal States
  2. The Vagus Nerve and Trigeminal Nucleus for Pain
  3. Complex Pain Syndrome and the Autonomic Nervous System
  4. Trauma, Polyvagal Theory, and Complex Pain

Seminar Outcome

2 1
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  •
  •
  •
  • Understand the anatomy and functions of the vagus nerve and the trigeminal nucleus, and their roles in pain processing.
  •
  • Explain the principles and applications of the polyvagal theory, mixed vagal states, and their implications for pain and trauma.
  •
  • Analyze the interconnections between the vagus nerve, polyvagal theory, mixed vagal states, trigeminal nucleus, complex pain syndrome, and trauma.
  •
  • Evaluate the impact of complex pain syndrome on the autonomic nervous system and overall well-being.
  •
  • Apply practical techniques and interventions to regulate mixed vagal states, manage complex pain, and support trauma recovery.
