This seminar delves into the interwoven topics of the polyvagal theory, mixed vagal states, trigeminal nucleus for pain, complex pain syndrome, and trauma. The seminar aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate connections between these concepts and their implications for pain management and trauma recovery.
The seminar will explore the interwoven vagus, which refers to the complex network of nerves and physiological processes associated with the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and the stress response. Participants learned about the vagal pathways and their impact on overall well-being and resilience.
Diving into the polyvagal theory, which proposes that the vagus nerve has evolved to respond to environmental cues and modulate social engagement, fight-or-flight responses, and immobilization. Participants gain insights into the three distinct states outlined by the polyvagal theory: the ventral vagal state, sympathetic fight-or-flight response, and dorsal vagal state. They learn how these states influence emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and stress responses.
Building upon the understanding of polyvagal theory, the seminar explored mixed vagal states, which occur when individuals experience a combination of the different vagal states simultaneously. Participants examined the nuances of these mixed states and their impact on autonomic functioning, emotional well-being, and pain perception.
The discussion moves to the trigeminal nucleus for pain, an essential component of the nervous system responsible for transmitting and processing pain signals. Participants delved into the intricacies of trigeminal neuralgia and explore the various treatment modalities available for managing this complex pain syndrome. The seminar emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in addressing trigeminal neuralgia and related conditions. It looks at how Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can support this condition.
The latter part of the seminar focuses on complex pain syndrome and trauma. Participants learned about the complex interplay between pain, trauma, and the nervous system. The seminar explored the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development of complex pain syndromes in individuals who have experienced trauma. About the educator
Prue Jeffries, CMT, RCST®, MSME/T is a Biodynamic Craniosacral Teacher and Continuum Teacher. In her personal practice Prue has worked extensively with Traumatic Brain Injuries, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Complex Regional Pain and Neurological Diseases for over 15 years. Regularly seeing people in coma, with Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) (before it was acknowledged to exist), concussions, seizures, Parkinson’s, MS, dementia, post-viral and microbial conditions now including Covid-19, autism spectrum and brain tumors. She brings her experiential working knowledge and experience with latest science to dive into this exciting topic that can support practitioners and their clients.
